Why we're building a lemonade stand

TCBTech’s newest software release is a Lemonade Stand. At least, a virtual facsimile of one. We’ve been building a demo of microservices architecture on Kubernetes, including build, deployment, and CI phases. It’s used for our Meetup, Eastside Kubernetes Workshop, as a demo and hack project.

Architecture of Lemonade Stand:
Lemonade Stand is a small collection of Microservices. A “Lemonade Stand” service first requests a cup from the “Cup Supply” service. It then takes that cup ID, passes it to the “Lemonade Supply” service, and gets a filled cup back, which it returns to the customer.

It’s a simple request path, enough to demonstrate components working together without overly complicating things. It shows that multiple services, potentially written in different languages, can share common protocol definitions and interact. It also demonstrates how software projects with different functions can share common libraries. Finally, all of the build and CI framework is replicated across all three - Diverging where necessary, but maintaining a structural similarity.

Lemonade Stand is a forever work in progress. It is a project meant to be hacked on and used to demonstrate concepts. It’s functioning and functional, but only so far as it needs to be for our demos each month.
